I tried many hundreds of other tech help sites, but this one did the trick. The problem was that my laptop could recognize my desktop on the network but my desktop couldn’t even see my laptop. I tried everything else under network settings and sharing on both machines, but nothing worked. That is until I tried what this site suggested; cmd prompt > optionalfeatures.exe > SMM 1.0/CIFS > only check SMB 1.0/CIFS Client box.
After reboot, perfect connection both ways. Finally!
